Gogglebox

Oh my god! I have just watched gogglebox with Matt and my friend Sabrina. Now can I just say that it's not something I watch very often.  Usually I watch it when channel surfing and there's nothing else on.  I've definitely never watched it with Matt before but we knew they were going to be 'reviewing' (I use that term loosely) The Big Painting Challenge.  I figured it was one to watch.

What I didn't expect was my portrait of Pam/Pat to be flashed up onto the screen.  One of the guys shrieked really loudly when he saw it.  I don't blame him - it is quite scary.  I have to say I thought the whole thing was hysterical and laughed as loudly as that man shrieked.  But now I feel I really must make a point - HER EYES ARE NOT TOO NARROW!!!  Here, judge for yourself..........

I live in the US so have never seen this gogglebox program so watched a program online. Its terrible! Poor Una. She is a bit annoying but only a little and she seems nice enough in the program.
Sorry to see your rejection yesterday. It was a tough assignment and reminder me of the sort Art school projects we had in the late 70's. However, this was spread over several months and not just a couple of days. I am curious, did you get any instruction whilst you were there? I also suspect the judges remarks have been cut to sound harsher than they appear on TV. I do remember the critiques we had at Art school and they could be tough but they would also have some useful points. Where you able to critique each's work? I wouldn't be put off by this experience as from your gallery your work has potential. I would just attend as many life drawing classes as you can and develop your own style. Not everyone can work in oils, watercolours etc which is why artists decide which mediums they work in. I would definitely have been struggling yesterday and it just brought back those tortured days on a foundation course. I have enjoyed watching this series but I not sure what they are aiming for. Maybe if the judges had been polar opposites in their own work, it would have worked better but as it is they are very similar in their field and this is reflecting the choices they are making.

Hi Jacqui
Thanks for your commiserations. It was an amazing experience to take part in the programme, although it was very hard work, especially painting under pressure with a film crew watching over you and being interviewed at the same time. Not your everyday painting experience!

I'm glad you're enjoying watching the show. It is sad that someone has to be eliminated each week and some people have suggested it would have been nice to keep all 10 artists in until the end to see how they developed and then pick a winner, but that would be a different show! Equally, I was sad to leave at that point because the following challenges would have been very much in my sphere of capability but unfortunately architectural painting got to me first and that definitely isn't!

There was no instruction of any kind. We were seated and had to tackle each challenge from thaeview point we were given in whatever medium we were instructed. I think it's not often you find a professional artist who works well in all mediums and covers all subjects, so it was definitely challenging for us amateur artists and you are right, a great deal of commenting etc isn't shown because the programme is only an hour long, whereas filming days were much much longer.

Having said all that, I have made great friendships with 9 other artists and we are having a group show in London after the programme has finished, which is fantastic.

I'm glad you're enjoying the programme. Keep watching. The challenges get tougher and the ending is good.
